
Women's Soccer Falls to No. 24 Notre Dame

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team narrowly fell to No. 24 Notre Dame 1-0 Thursday night. The Fighting Irish scored in the 38th minute and held off a strong Wolfpack rally throughout the second half to escape with the win.
The Wolfpack moves to 7-3-0, while Notre Dame improves to 6-1-3 with the win. The loss ends the Pack's six-match winning streak and run of four straight shutouts.
The Pack tallied nine shots and eight corner kicks in the match and forced four saves from the Irish keeper. After Notre Dame opened the scoring, the Pack dominated the second half with possession and chances, but came a few touches short in the final third.

Notre Dame opened the match with the majority of the possession and chances, but the Wolfpack defense held firm. Ella Bonner was strong on the back line and came up with several big stops, preventing Notre Dame from getting through on goal.
Goalkeeper Sydney Wootten also had a good display in the half, producing a one-on-one save in the 36th minute.
Late in the half, NC State made a big push on the Irish goal. Michaella van Maanen led the Wolfpack attack and hit a first-time shot towards the goal. The shot swerved right, forcing the Notre Dame keeper to make big save and push the ball over the bar.
Despite the Pack's increased pressure late in the half, it was Notre Dame who tallied the goal. Shannon Hendricks found space on the right side and crossed the ball into the box. Alexis Martel-Lamothe put a foot on the ball and sent it into the back of the net. The goal ended the Pack's run of 463 minutes without conceding a goal.
The teams entered half with Notre Dame holding the 1-0 lead.
The Pack came out with a new intensity in the second half and won the possession battle and created a majority of the chances. NC State outshot the Irish 5-4 in the half.
Throughout the half NC State ran at the goal, but the Irish defense, which has only allowed five goals all season did well to keep NC State out of the box. The Pack earned three corners in the half and also had opportunities through free kicks, but couldn't capitalize.
