RALEIGH – Paced by a consistent offensive onslaught that featured 23 total shots, the NC State men's soccer team picked up a solid 3-1 victory over visiting Liberty Tuesday evening inside Dail Soccer Stadium.
Goals by Tanner Roberts, Clayton Sparks, and a three-point evening (one goal, one assist) from Julius Duchscherer proved the difference on an evening when NC State outshot its opponent for the fourth straight match and broke a scoring drought that spanned a total length of 405 minutes.
The Wolfpack outshot Liberty 8-0 in the first half but would ultimately find the breakthrough in the 63rd minute. Travis Wannemuehler received a pass from Duchscherer and whipped it in from the wing towards the penalty area. Roberts rose up and nodded it down and into the back of the net, scoring his second career goal to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 advantage.
Liberty (3-3-1) did not take long to respond, taking advantage of a failed Wolfpack clearance in the 67th minute to level the match at 1-1 when Kevin Mendoza scored his first goal of the season from 10 yards out.
Just three minutes later, the Wolfpack (2-5-0) built a lead it would not relinquish when Sparks settled a cross from Caleb Duvernay inside the penalty area and finished from just outside the six-yard box.
Duchscherer capped off the win in the 78th minute, executing a very nice give-and-go with redshirt sophomore Nick Retzlaff to make it 3-1. The assist was the first point of Retzlaff's career.
NC State returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 at No. 14 Wake Forest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Spry Stadium and the action will be broadcast live on the ACC Network Extra.
