WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Denied sure goals on brilliant defensive plays, the NC State men's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision at No. 14 Wake Forest Saturday evening.
After going down a goal early in the first half, the Wolfpack mounted a concerted comeback effort that did everything but find the back of the net. Led by Lukas Zarges and Caleb Duvernay (two shots each), NC State created multiple quality scoring opportunities throughout the course of the match. On the other end of the field, senior goalkeeper Alex McCauley made four saves.
Ranked 14th in the NSCAA poll and 10th in the SoccerAmerica rankings, Wake Forest (7-1-1, 3-0-0 ACC) took an early lead in the 10th minute on a Jacori Hayes goal that was assisted by Ian Harkes and Luis Argudo. Hayes received the ball inside the 18-yard box, took a touch and whipped a curling left-foot strike inside the near post to give the hosts a lead.
Zarges came inches from leveling the match in the 26th minute when his left-footed attempt beat goalkeeper Alec Ferrell but was denied on the line by Harkes. The senior then had another great opportunity in the 54th minute on a feed from teammate Clayton Sparks. Zarges darted through the Wake Forest penalty area and got a solid foot on the cross, but Wake Forest goalkeeper Alec Ferrell made an outstanding save to preserve his team's seven-match shutout streak.
NC State's best opportunity in the final ten minutes came off the head of Duvernay, who nodded a Zarges corner kick just wide of the far post in the 81st minute.
The Wolfpack (2-6-0, 0-3-0 ACC) returns home next week for two straight matches. NC State will host Wright State (Tuesday, Sept. 27) and Duke (Friday, Sept. 30) at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh.
