No. 6 #Pack9 Evens Series, Beats Clemson 20-9
5/7/2016 8:15:00 PM | Baseball
NC State baseball scored 20 in ACC play for the first time since 2010
Clemson (30-16, 12-14 ACC) opened the scoring with a solo shot to left in the first. NC State (32-12, 13-8) responded with 20 unanswered. The Tigers trimmed the lead with two in the fourth, two in the seventh, and four in the ninth to set the final 20-9.
NC State's 20-run output represents the most against an ACC opponent since the Pack hung 22 on Maryland in 2010. The total falls one short of tying the most ever scored by a visiting team at Clemson (21 by South Carolina in 2001 and Georgia Tech in 1956). The Pack's previous high at Doug Kingsmore Stadium was 18 in 1996. The margin of victory is the Wolfpack's most against Clemson since a 13-run win over the Tigers in 1997. NC State becomes the 10th team to score 20 or more against Clemson, and the first in 15 years.
Every Wolfpack batter had at least one hit by the end of the third inning. Eight finished the game with two or more. Nine Wolfpack batters scored at least once, eight recording multiple runs.
Chance Shepard scored a career-high four times in a 3-for-4 outing with a double, two walks, and an RBI. Josh McLain matched his career-high of three hits for the fifth time in 2016, and his career-high four RBIs for the second, in a 3-for-6 day with two doubles, two runs, and his 11th stolen base of the year.
Preston Palmeiro contributed his second three-hit ballgame of the weekend, going 3-for-5 with two runs and a walk. Evan Mendoza extended his hitting streak to 19 games in a 2-for-3 performance with three runs to tie his career-high, two RBIs, and a career-high three walks.
Wolfpack starter Brian Brown (7-1) scored the win on 6 1/3, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits and four walks with three punchouts. Over Brown's last four starts, the Wolfpack has produced a combined 72 runs of support. Chris Williams worked the next 2 2/3 to finish, allowing four earned on six hits and three walks with one strikeout.
NC State returns to action Sunday at 1 PM on ESPN3 for the series finale. Radio coverage will be handled by 88.1 WKNC and 1550 WCLY. Fans can follow along with live stats on GoPack.com or Twitter updates via @NCStateBaseball.
