NC State baseball won its series over No. 17 North Carolina with a 10-1 win Saturday at Doak Field at Dail Park
The Wolfpack (34-18, 15-13 ACC) took a 1-0 lead in the second when Brock Deatherage scored on a wild pitch following his leadoff triple. Preston Palmeiro homered in the third to open a 3-0 lead. North Carolina (34-21, 13-17) scored its lone run in the fourth before NC State added two more in the bottom half. The Pack made it 6-1 in the sixth and tacked on three in the seventh thanks to Evan Mendoza's two-run shot off the flagpole in left center. Ryne Willard's RBI single in the eighth set the final 10-1.
Eight different Wolfpack batters contributed at least one hit, with four providing multi-hit efforts. Mendoza went 2-for-4 with his fourth homer of the year, two runs, and three RBIs. The sophomore third baseman has hits in 25 of the last 26 games. Palmeiro homered for the eighth time in a 2-for-2 outing with a run, two RBIs, and a career-high tying three walks. Stephen Pitarra drove in a pair during a 2-for-5 effort with two runs. Brett Kinneman doubled twice in a 2-for-4 day with an RBI and two runs.
Deatherage tripled for the fifth time this season, scoring once and walking once in a 1-for-4 game. Andrew Knizner singled and walked once in a 1-for-4 performance with a stolen base. Chance Shepard scored twice on a walk and a double. Willard finished 1-for-1 with an RBI.
Wolfpack starter Ryan Williamson left in the fourth inning after one unearned run on two hits and a walk, striking out five. Austin Staley (2-1) collected the win over 1 2/3, shutting out the Heels on two hits and a walk with one punchout. Evan Brabrand worked the next inning with one hit allowed. Will Gilbert earned his sixth save of the year on three innings of one-hit ball, fanning two.
Gilbert, Shepard, Willard, Kyle Smith, Travis Orwig, Chris Williams, and Pratt Maynard were honored prior to first pitch for Senior Day.
