NC State baseball lost 16-4 on Friday night at Doak Field at Dail Park
The Wolfpack (33-18, 14-13 ACC) slipped into a 3-0 deficit in the first. North Carolina (34-20, 13-16) scored twice more in the fourth before Brett Kinneman's two-run homer trimmed the gap to 5-2. The Heels added three in the sixth, when Preston Palmeiro contributed his two-run bomb to right, narrowing the margin to 8-4. From there, North Caorlina scored five in the seventh, two in the eighth, and one in the ninth to set the final 16-4.
Kinneman's homer marks the fourth of his career. Palmeiro makes it seven for the season. Five other Wolfpack batters contributed one hit each. Brock Deatherage singled and scored on Kinneman's home run. Evan Mendoza went 1-for-4, scoring on Palmeiro's longball. Andrew Knizner provided a 1-for-3 outing. Shane Shepard and Josh McLain both went 1-for-3.
Wolfpack starter Brian Brown (7-3) took the loss on six earned over 5 1/3 innings, striking out five. Sean Adler entered the game there, the first of six relievers used by the Pack. Chris Williams pitched the most effectively, retiring both batters he faced on four pitches. Karl Keglovits, Christian Demby, Kyle Smith, and Tim Naughton worked the remaining three innings. Naughton notched the first strikeout of his career.
