No. 13 NC State Defeats No. 17 North Carolina, 6-4

NC State baseball won its series-opener with the Heels on Thursday night
RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 13 NC State edged No. 17 North Carolina 6-4 on Thursday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (33-17, 14-12 ACC) fell into a 1-0 deficit in the top first. North Carolina (33-20, 12-16) added one more in the second to make it 2-0. The Pack broke through with three runs in the sixth to take the lead, then three more in the seventh to stretch the margin to 6-2. The Heels made it interesting in the ninth, scoring two and bringing the go-ahead run to the plate, but Will Gilbert escaped the jam to set the final 6-4.
Four different Wolfpack batters contributed multi-hit efforts. Stephen Pitarra scored twice in a 2-for-4 game with a double and an RBI. Preston Palmeiro drove in one and scored once in a 2-for-4 performance. Joe Dunand doubled twice, raising his season total to 16, with a run and an RBI.
Brock Deatherage contributed a 2-for-4 effort with an RBI. Brett Kinneman scored the game-winning run after reaching via walk. Chance Shepard scored once and singled. Evan Mendoza provided a sac fly RBI in an 0-for-2 night, snapping his hitting streak at 23 games, the third-longest in school history.
NC State utilized seven pitchers in the ballgame following Cory Wilder's exit in the first. Chris Williams represented the first out of the pen, striking out one and allowing an earned run on two hits. Travis Orwig worked the next 2 2/3, holding the Heels to a hit and a walk. Austin Staley pitched 1 1/3 with one hit allowed. Cody Beckman (2-0) scored the win by fanning three in a perfect 1 1/3. Evan Brabrand gave up two earned in an inning with two punchouts. Will Gilbert collected his fifth save of the year with two hits surrendered in the ninth.
