Chance Shepard homered for the seventh time in the last eight games
RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 8 NC State baseball won its seventh game in a row, topping Bucknell 5-2 on Sunday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (10-2) pitching staff sat down 13 of the last 14 batters it faced, the lone runner reaching on a questionable hit-by-pitch call. Chance Shepard started the scoring with a two-run homer in the first, his seventh in the last eight games. Trailing 3-0, Bucknell (5-5) trimmed its deficit to 3-2 by the fifth. NC State stretched the lead with one run in the fifth and eighth to set the final 5-2.
Shepard's seventh bomb of the year highlighted a 2-for-4 outing with a run and two RBIs. Preston Palmeiro reached base in all four plate appearances over a 3-for-4 day, scoring twice, starting with his sixth double of the year. Two singles followed, before Palmeiro reached on an error in his last at-bat.
Joe Dunand and Shane Shepard each contributed a pair of singles. Stephen Pitarra had two of his own with an RBI. Brock Deatherage scored once in a 1-for-4 day. Andrew Knizner doubled and drove in a run.
Wolfpack starter Joe O'Donnell (2-0) took a no-hitter into the fourth, leaving after 5 1/3 with two earned on five hits and a walk, fanning four. Cody Beckman followed him with a perfect 2 1/3, featuring one strikeout. Kyle Smith, Will Gilbert, and Tommy DeJuneas retired all four batters faced, sealing the victory.
