NC State baseball won its second in a row, clinching the series against Wright State
RALEIGH - No. 8 NC State baseball rallied for a series-clinching win over Wright State, 8-4 on Sunday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (5-2) fell behind for the seventh game in a row, affording Wright State (5-2) a 1-0 lead in the top first. Josh McLain scored following a leadoff double to tie it 1-1 through an inning.Â
NC State took command with a four-run rally in the third behind Chance Shepard's third homer in as many days. Leading 5-2 in the fifth, the Pack tacked on two more. The Raiders narrowed the gap to 7-4 in the eighth. An insurance run in the bottom half set the final, 8-4.
Andrew Knizner led the offense with a 3-for-4 outing including two runs and an RBI. Joe Dunand doubled in a 2-for-4 day with an RBI. McLain went 2-for-5 with a double and a run.Â
Preston Palmeiro provided a hit for the sixth time in seven games this season, scoring twice with an RBI and a walk. Evan Mendoza started at third for the second day in a row, scoring once in a 1-for-3 game with a walk. Brock Deatherage contributed a hit and scored once. Shane Shepard drove in a run and walked once.
Wolfpack starter Joe O'Donnell (1-0) took the win on a career high seven strikeouts over five innings, allowing two earned on a walk and six hits. Sean Adler worked the next 1 1/3, holding the Raiders to a hit and a walk. Will Gilbert punched out four in 1 2/3. Tommy DeJuneas pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts.
