RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 8 NC State scored six in the bottom eighth to win its third in a row, dropping UNCG 8-4 on Tuesday at Doak Field at Dail Park.
The Wolfpack (6-2) held a 2-1 lead before falling behind for the eighth game in 2016, following a three-run eighth for the Spartans (6-2). NC State trimmed the lead in half with Josh McLain's RBI single, took the lead on a two-run error, and set the final on Chance Shepard's fourth homer in as many games.
Shepard's bomb represented his lone hit, added to a pair of walks in a 1-for-3 outing with a run and three RBIs. McLain went 2-for-5 with two runs, a stolen base, and an RBI. Joe Dunand doubled for the sixth time in a 1-for-4 performance with a run.Â
Evan Mendoza started at second before moving to third late in the game, going 2-for-4 with a run. Brock Deatherage had a pair of hits, one a bunt single, in a 2-for-4 ballgame with a run. Andrew Knizner drove in two and scored once, reaching on an error in the game's deciding play. Ryne Willard started at third, submitting a 1-for-3 day with a run.Â
Wolfpack starter Cory Wilder lasted four innings, allowing one earned on two hits with three punchouts and two walks. Travis Orwig and Austin Staley combined to work the next 1 2/3, shutting out the Spartans on two hits and a walk. Sean Adler allowed two earned after escaping a jam in the sixth. Tommy DeJuneas (1-0) scored the win on two innings, with one earned on three hits and a walk, striking out the final batter of the game.
