NC State combined for five home runs, the most since May 2010, to claim the victory
CONWAY, S.C. - No. 10 NC State baseball collected its first win of the year, 13-10 over No. 21 Coastal Carolina, in an NCAA Regional atmosphere on the Chanticleers' home turf.
The Wolfpack (1-1) powered its way to victory with five homers, the most since seven against Towson on May 9, 2010. Andrew Knizner started the fireworks with his 10th career homer, a moonshot to left in the first. Freshman Xavier LeGrant joined the party next, socking a solo shot on his first collegiate swing of the bat. Joe Dunand broke a 7-7 tie, before Josh McLain and Preston Palmeiro went back-to-back to cap the four-run eighth. McLain's bomb represents the first of his career, eighth for both Dunand and Palmeiro.
NC State fell behind 3-1 after three Coastal (1-1) runs in the bottom of the first. The Pack trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the third, and took a 6-5 lead in the fifth. Tied 7-7 heading into the eighth, the Wolfpack's home run barrage opened an 11-7 lead. A three-run jack in the bottom ninth trimmed the lead in half to set the final margin at 13-10.Â
Palmeiro supplied four RBIs, two shy of tying his career high, in a 4-for-5 outing with two runs, a homer, and two doubles. McLain went 3-for-5 from the leadoff spot with a homer, two RBIs, and three runs. LeGrant reached in his first three plate appearances, drawing the start at second in his first college appearance. Knizner homered in a 1-for-4 ballgame with a run, an RBI, and a walk.
Brock Deatherage scored three times on a bunt single and two walks with a stolen base. Stephen Pitarra contributed his first career RBI in a 1-for-3 performance. Dunand added a 2-for-5 day with two runs, two RBIs, and a home run. Garrett Suggs doubled in a ninth-inning, pinch hit appearance.
Will Gilbert (1-0) claimed the win on 2 1/3 innings of one-hit ball, walking one and fanning three. Starter Brian Brown left after 2 2/3. Sean Adler made his Wolfpack debut, allowing two runs, one earned, on two innings with three strikeouts. Evan Brabrand allowed one earned in an inning of work. Tommy DeJuneas finished the outing with two punchouts in the ninth.
