RALEIGH – The NC State women's soccer team lost its 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference home opener Thursday evening, falling to No. 10 Virginia Tech by a final score of 3-0.
Â
The Wolfpack (4-7-0, 0-2-0 ACC) played a strong first half, holding the Hokies (9-1-1, 1-1-0 ACC) scoreless while also recording four shots. Virginia Tech stepped up its pressure in the second stanza, scoring goals in the 52nd, 76th, and 78th minutes to earn the 3-0 win.
Â
NC State recorded six shots on the evening, four of which came from junior forward Rachel Cox. Jackie Stengel and Taylor Porter each added one of their own. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Stelljes made seven saves for the Wolfpack in the loss.
Â
Â
Murielle Tiernan opened the Hokies' scoring in the 52nd minute, receiving a pass from Ashley Meier outside the penalty area and beating Stelljes to the near post from 20 yards away to give her side a 1-0 lead.
Â
State was able to defend well over the course of the next 20 minutes and had a strong scoring opportunity waved away in the 71st when Stengel absorbed contact and went down in the penalty area but did not receive a call.
Â
A scramble in the box following a Hokie corner kick led to the second goal of the evening, as an NC State defender deflected a loose ball into the side netting for an own goal. Just two minutes later, Meier scored her fifth goal of the season from 22 yards away, hitting a hard shot off the crossbar and into the net.
Â
NC State returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Boston College. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Eagles is set for 1 p.m. from Dail Soccer Field.
