RALEIGH – Despite outshooting the visitors and controlling a majority of the match, the NC State women's soccer team endured a tough 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Boston College Eagles Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Field.
NC State recorded 13 shots—its highest total in an Atlantic Coast Conference match this season—but fell behind in the 85th minute when Gaby Carreiro scored the lone goal from 16 yards away. Chasing down a loose ball, Carreiro was able to beat freshman goalkeeper Sydney Wootten to the far post with a curving shot to put the Eagles (8-3-1, 2-0-1 ACC) ahead.
Wootten would finish the match with three saves.
Dayna Tomayko and Jackie Stengel each recorded four shots in the match to lead all players. Caroline Gentry (two shots), Crystal Cordova (1), Alexa Allen (1), and Brittany Stanko (1) also generated attempts.
State's best scoring opportunity of the first half came in the 45th minute when Stanko received a long ball from freshman defender Hannah Keogh. Stanko hit a sharp first-time shot on target, but Boston College's Alexis Bryant made the save.
Stengel fired three shots in a three-minute span between the 81st and 83rd minutes to nearly put the Wolfpack ahead. Her hard and low attempt in the 83rd minute skimmed towards the near post but Bryant was able to make an impromptu kick save to deny the goal.
NC State (4-8-0, 0-3-0 ACC) will only have one match next week, hosting the current national No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers on Friday, Oct. 2. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Dail Soccer Field.
