RALEIGH – The NC State women's soccer team ended a three-match home stand with a 2-0 loss to visiting UNC Greensboro Thursday night in a match which was delayed on two occasions by thunderstorms in the Raleigh area.
Trailing 1-0 in the 85th minute, the Wolfpack (3-4-0) nearly found the equalizer on a shot by redshirt junior Dayna Tomayko. Her attempt beat the goalkeeper but was headed off the line by a UNCG defender to keep the visitors ahead 1-0.
The Spartans (2-5-0) put the match away in the 87th minute when Candice Forbes gave her side a 2-0 lead thanks to an assist from Katelyn Mountjoy.
NC State outshot the visitors by a 16-13 margin but was stymied seven times by UNCG goalkeeper Chloe Buehler and twice by goal-line clearances from the Spartan defense.
The Wolfpack controlled the early portion of the match, firing multiple shots on target to test Buehler. The visitors were able to quickly reverse the momentum in the 30th minute, taking a 1-0 lead on a Diarra Simmons shot to the far post from 12 yards out.
The match was suspended in the 71st minute due to thunderstorms in the Raleigh area. NC State and UNC Greensboro continued the contest at 9:35 p.m. after a 43-minute stoppage.
NC State will return to action on Sunday, September 13 when the team visits Davidson. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. from Alumni Soccer Stadium.
