Former pitcher in the Women’s College World Series (WCWS) joins coaching staff
RALEIGH, N.C. – Tracie Adix-Zins, a former All-American pitcher who led her team to the Women's College World Series (WCWS), has joined the NC State softball coaching staff as an assistant coach, according to an announcement by head coach Shawn Rychcik on Thursday.
In her role with the Wolfpack, she will serve as the pitching coach and be responsible for all aspects of the pitching staff.
Â
"I'm excited to have Tracie join our staff," said Rychcik. "I think we're adding a lot of pitching knowledge and coaching experience to our program. As a player, she led her team to the College World Series and as a coach she's been able to build a staff that has advanced to the NCAA postseason. I think she's going to be a good fit in our program and help us build upon the success we've had here." Â
Â
Adix-Zins (Pronounced ODD-ix ZENS) joins the NC State coaching staff following a year as the pitching coach at Oklahoma State. During her lone season with the Cowgirls, she helped a young pitching staff composed of underclassmen throw seven complete game shutouts and finish the year with the second-fewest walks in the Big 12 Conference.
Â
Prior to her time at OSU, Adix-Zins spent four seasons as the pitching coach at Wisconsin. She helped the Badgers compile a 144-75 record during her tenure in Madison, highlighted by the program's first-ever Big 10 Tournament title in 2013.
Â
Wisconsin's pitching staff finished the '13 season with an earned run average (ERA) of 1.96, the fourth-best in school history and best since 2002. That campaign was a memorable one for the pitchers, as the staff threw three no-hitters – the most in a single season for the program and first no-hitter in the last 12 seasons.
Â
Under her instruction, Cassandra Darrah ended her career first in the Badger record books for winning percentage (.684), second in wins (65) and second in ERA (2.17).
Â
In all, Adix-Zins guided Wisconsin pitchers to nine Big 10 Pitcher/Freshman of the Week honors, five All-Region selections, three All-Big 10 accolades and one Big 10 Tournament MVP honor during her four-year stint.
Â
Before arriving at Wisconsin, she spent three seasons as the pitching coach and graduate assistant at South Dakota State.
Â
As a player, Adix-Zins led Depaul to the 2007 Women's College World Series (WCWS) with a 22-4 record as a senior, highlighted by a perfect 10-0 mark against Big East opponents. She threw 11 scoreless innings in the Norman (Okla.) NCAA Super Regional and earned the win in both games to upset the fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners on their home field.
Â
In addition to her stellar record in the circle, she finished the '07 season with a 0.89 ERA – the fifth-best among Division I pitchers. She threw 10 complete game shutouts and struck out 168 batters en route to being named the Big East Pitcher of the Year and a second team NFCA All-American in her final year with the Blue Demons.
Â
The Edmonds, Wash., native earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Depaul and a Master of Science degree in sports pedagogy from South Dakota State.
Â
Adix-Zins will join Katie Grimes, who is entering her fourth season as the hitting/outfield coach, to complete Rychcik's coaching staff for his fourth season at the helm of the squad. Both of the Pack's assistants played in the WCWS to boast the only pair of assistant coaches in the ACC to have done so.
