No. 34 Wolfpack Blanks Miami, Charlotte in Doubleheader

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The No. 34 NC State men's tennis team never trailed on the way to shutout victories over Miami and Charlotte. The Pack opened the day with a 7-0 win over Miami and knocked off Charlotte, 4-0. The Wolfpack improves to 15-9 (4-6 ACC), and has won five of its last six matches as it enters the last week of the regular season.
NC State 7, Miami 0
All three seniors won in straight sets as the No. 34 NC State men's tennis team shut out Miami, 7-0. State took early advantages on five of the six courts and held on to pick up the victory.
The Pack's newly minted doubles pairs were successful once again as the team took the doubles point.
After falling behind 0-2, Simon Norenius and Thomas Weigel scored eight straight points to win their second doubles match as a team, 8-2. Minutes later, Robbie Mudge and Nick Horton won their match, 8-5, as NC State clinched the doubles point.
In singles, the Pack jumped out to a dominating lead. State took the first set on five of the six courts. Austin Powell headlined the opening sets for the Pack, shutting out Miami's Christian Langmo, 6-0.
Fellow seniors Beck Bond and Mudge also turned in strong first-set performances, winning, 6-1, and 6-3, respectively.
Powell handled business quickly in his second set, as he extended State's lead to, 2-0. Moments later, Bond followed suit, winning, 6-1, 6-1 and extending his winning streak to seven consecutive matches.
Norenius got back on track, picking up his first win in four matches. The junior also provided the fourth point of the day, clinching the match for the Pack.
At No. 1 singles, No. 66 Robbie Mudge defeated No. 87 Piotr Lonacki, 6-3, 7-5. The victory was his 16th win this season and fifth over a ranked opponent.
NC State 4, Charlotte 0
The Wolfpack snapped Charlotte's 13 match winning streak, shutting out the 49ers, 4-0.
For the second consecutive match, NC State took the doubles point. Mudge and Horton earned a victory at No. 1 doubles, while Bond and Weigel clinched the victory at the second spot in the lineup.
In singles, Weigel extended his winning streak to five matches with a, 6-1, 6-3 victory to push the Pack's lead to, 2-0.
Mudge followed for his second win of the day. The senior dominated his first set, and survived a strong comeback attempt from Vikram Hundal in the second set to win, 6-1, 7-5.
It was a race for the match point as both Bond and Horton were a point away from sealing the win. Horton finished first to end the match and earn his 12th win of the season.
Powell and Shoti Meparidze took their matches to third sets, but both went unfinished.
Up Next:
NC State will head north for a trio of matches over the weekend. On Thursday, the Pack will face Bryant University at 9 a.m. before taking on Boston College at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, April 18, NC State will face Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
