No. 27 NC State Takes Down Doubleheader Opponents

RICHMOND, Va.- The No. 27 NC State men's tennis team won both matches on Friday as it improved to 9-3 on the season with victories over VCU and Howard.
Once again, strong matchesfrom the team's upperclassmen led the charge.In singles playBeck Bond, Robbie Mudge and Simon Norenius paced the Wolfpack in the victory overVCU, while Norenius and Nick Horton highlighted the win over Howard.
NC State 4, VCU 3:
VCU entered the match with nine of its 10 wins coming inside of Thalhimer Tennis Center. However, the Pack was unfazed in the road environment as it defeated VCU, 4-3.
Bond and Thomas Weigel partnered up for the first time this season and came away with a quick 8-2 win. Mudge and Ian Dempster earned their eighth win of the season as they clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 victory.
Bond extended the Wolfpack's lead with a straight-set win, while Mudge added another point. The Pack was in prime position to clinch the match, but VCU came roaring back. The Rams rattled off three victories to force State into a must-win match.
Norenius came through with the clinching point for his ninth win of the season. After falling behind in a first-set tie breaker, the junior dominated the final two sets winning 6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 6-2.
NC State 5, Howard 0:
The Pack rolled to a 5-0 win against Howard in the second match of the doubleheader. In a shortened match format, the Pack won every singles match in straight sets as it was able to exercise its depth and rest its starters.
In the shortened format, only one doubles match and four singles matches were played.
In doubles, the duo of Bond and Weigel won the point to pick up their second win of the day.
Horton played in his first match of the day and claimed the second point with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win. The rest of the Pack would follow suit as Dempster, Norenius and Shoti Meparidze all won in straight sets.
Up Next:
The Pack heads home for a match against UNC-Wilmington on March 2 at 1:30 p.m inside J.W. Isenhour Center. This will be the first home match for NC State in 43 days.
