NC State Softball Runs Past Dayton, 12-3
2/21/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
STATESBORO, Ga. - The NC State softball team used an eight-run first inning to earn a dominating 12-3 win against the Dayton Flyers Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field. The contest was stopped after just six innings due to the mercy rule, which stops a game after the fifth inning if a team is leading by eight or more runs.
The Wolfpack improves to 6-6 on the season, while the Flyers fall to 2-4.
Rychcik's Review
"I'm really happy with how our offense came out today, making a statement in that first inning," said head coach Shawn Rychcik. "I think we had a little bit to prove after we only scored three runs on Dayton yesterday."
On scoring eight runs in the first inning...
"I think we had a lot of real quality at-bats and that's something we talked about going into the game. The hits and the runs will come if we have good at-bats."
On senior pitcher Emily Weiman...
"I thought Emily was really good again today and I'm really happy with that. She only gave up one hit and we'll be in good shape the rest of the season with her only giving up one hit a game. The pitching has been outstanding this weekend, so I'm real happy."
Quick Hits
- NC State sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning, collecting five hits in the frame to score eight runs.
- Sophomore Tyler Ross gave the Wolfpack a 2-0 lead on her first home run of the season, a two-run blast to left center. Junior Maggie Hawkins followed with her third round-tripper of the year to nearly the same spot, as the Pack tallied back-to-back homers for the first time in 2015.
- After freshman Meredith Burroughs walked and senior Sara Lippard was hit-by-pitch, sophomore Hannah Yeager tripled down the right field line to score both runners on the play and make it 5-0.
- Freshman Alyssa Compton reached on an error, which scored Yeager and senior Renada Davis doubled to right center prior to an RBI-single by junior Lana Van Dyken as the Wolfpack jumped out to an 8-0 lead.
- Van Dyken ignited the Wolfpack offense in the fourth inning, as she led off the frame with a double to right center. Ross ripped a single up the middle to plate Van Dyken from second base. After a single from Hawkins, a passed ball allowed Ross to score from third.
- In the top of the sixth, Hawkins drove another ball out of the ballpark for her first multi-homer game as a member of the Wolfpack, giving the squad a 12-3 lead.
- Dayton scored its runs on a solo homer by Gabrielle Snyder and two unearned runs following a few miscues by the NC State defense.
In the Pitcher's Circle
- Senior Emily Weiman earned the start in the circle and went the distance to record her fourth win and fourth complete game of the season. She struck out nine batters in the contest and did not issue any walks, while allowing one hit.
Inside the Box Score
- Hawkins had a fantastic day at the plate to lead the Wolfpack offense with a 3-for-4 performance, highlighted by two home runs and three runs batted in. Ross was 2-for-4 with three RBI, Van Dyken was 2-for-2, while Davis, freshman Macauley Prickett and Yeager each had one hit.
Game Notes
- Saturday's 12-3 win vs. Dayton was the first mercy-rule win for the squad since April 16, 2014 versus UNCW.
- Weiman made her 127th career start in the contest and notched the 101st complete game of her career, just one shy of the program record of 102 set by Abbie Sims.
- The Wolfpack hit back-to-back home runs in the contest for the first time since April 19, 2014 versus Boston College at home.
