STATESBORO, Ga. – The NC State softball team completed play in the Eagle Classic with a perfect 4-0 record, after defeating Eastern Kentucky, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The Wolfpack moves to 7-6 on the year, while the Colonels fall to 5-6.
Rychcik’s Review
“We came out and played really well again today,” said head coach Shawn Rychcik. “Courtney [Mirabella] was sharp in the circle today only giving up three hits and Emily [Weiman] came in and closed the door for us to get the save.
“We got some timely hits in a few key spots and it was nice to see Hannah [Yeager] put a good swing on a ball to put us up 4-0 at that time on a home run. Overall, it was a really good weekend and I’m pleased with the way we played.”
Quick Hits
- NC State struck first in the contest with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Junior Maggie Hawkins and sophomore Morgan Medford each drew a walk and senior Sara Lippard moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt.
- A wild pitch allowed Hawkins to score from third base and freshman Alyssa Compton drove in Medford on a single to left field as the Wolfpack plated two runs in the frame.
- State tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning, following sophomore Hannah Yeager’s first round-tripper of the season. The Los Gatos, Calif., native smacked the first pitch she saw from EKU starting pitcher Hayley Flynn over the fence in left field for a two-run home run.
- Sophomore Molly Hutchison drove in the final run of the contest for the Pack, as she lined a single down the right field line to score senior Renada Davis, who walked earlier in the frame.
- Both of Eastern Kentucky’s runs came on one swing of the bat, as Sarah Jackson hit a two-run homer.
In the Pitcher’s Circle
- Sophomore Courtney Mirabella (3-2) started in the circle for NC State and pitched the first five innings before giving way to senior Emily Weiman. Mirabella struck out eight batters and only allowed one earned run.
- Weiman entered the contest in a save situation and converted to get her first save of the season and fourth of her career. She tossed two innings and struck out five of the six batters she faced.
Inside the Box Score
- Junior Lana Van Dyken led the Wolfpack at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, including a triple to right center. Hutchison was 2-for-4 in the contest, while Compton and Yeager each had one hit.
Game Notes
- With Yeager’s home run in the fourth inning, the Wolfpack has now hit a home run in each of the last four games. The blast was her third career homer.
- Weiman was credited with the save in the contest and that was the first save for a Pack pitcher since Mar. 19, 2014, when Mirabella earned a save versus Georgia Tech.
- NC State and Eastern Kentucky had never meet prior to this weekend’s games, and the Wolfpack won both contests taking Friday’s game by an 8-1 margin and winning, 5-2, on Sunday.
Up Next
The Wolfpack returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 25, when it travels to Wilmington, N.C., for a matchup with the UNCW Seahawks. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
