NC State (2-0) baseball dropped Davidson 8-3 on Saturday at Doak Field at Dail Park, behind Preston Palmeiro’s 5-for-5 outing and a solid debut from freshman righthander Evan Mendoza.
Palmeiro’s performance marked the first five-hit outing for a Wolfpack player since Andrew Knizner pulled the feat on March 15 at Florida State last season, and extends his torrid start to the 2015 season. For the year, Palmeiro sits 7-for-8 (.875) with a homer, five RBIs, three runs, and a 1.250 SLG. As a team, the Pack’s hitting .392 against opposing pitchers, with double-figure hits in both contests.
Evan Mendoza (1-0) secured the win in his first collegiate start, fanning four over five innings of work. Mendoza managed to scatter four hits, his lone blemish a solo shot to lead off the sixth. The freshman worked efficiently, throwing 71 pitches total and 46 for strikes.
Jon Olczak, Brad Stone, and Joe O’Donnell combined to pitch the final four frames, limiting Davidson (1-1) to a combined two earned on three hits. Olczak went the longest, striking out a pair and walking two in two innings during the sixth and seventh.
Logan Ratledge drew the start at DH and once again provided a steady hand at the top of the order. The senior finished the day 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Ratledge finishes the weekend 5-for-8 (.625) with four runs, two RBIs, and a pair of walks.
Three other Wolfpackers submitted multi-hit efforts. Jake Armstrong drove in the Pack’s first two runs in a 2-for-4 day. Joe Dunand had State’s only extra-base hit, a double off the wall in center to cap his 2-for-4 outing with a pair of runs scored. Joel McKeithan made the start at second and posted a 2-for-4 line with two runs.
Sunday action at NC State’s tournament has been cancelled due to impending weather. The Pack returns to action on Tuesday, February 17 at 3 p.m. to host UNC Wilmington.
