NC State (2-1) baseball suffered a 9-6 defeat at the hands of Albany (1-0) to open its Baseball at the Beach weekend.
Though the Pack has matched or bettered its opponents for total hits in each of its first four contests, the seven mustered against the Danes represented a season low.
Chance Shepard sparked the Wolfpack’s comeback effort, blasting a solo shot over the left field fence in the top fourth for his first long ball of the year and fourth career. Shepard drove in another to finish the day 2-for-5 from the cleanup spot. Preston Palmeiro contributed a bases-clearing triple in the sixth, rocketed into the right field corner to trim the deficit to 8-6. Joel McKeithan scored twice in a 2-for-4 game.
Cory Wilder (1-1) ended up saddled with the loss, leaving after 2 2/3. Jon Olczak went the next 1 1/3, allowing one earned. Curt Britt pitched the next two innings. Will Gilbert finished the game with two perfect innings and three strikeouts.

Forced to play a Saturday doubleheader due to weather issues on Friday, the Pack (3-1) needed a bounceback and came through, scoring a 3-1 win over Florida International in the nightcap.
Freshman pitching was the story for NC State, a pair of sterling debuts by Brian Brown and Tommy DeJuneas. Brown (1-0) fanned nine in six innings of work, holding the Panthers to two hits and one earned run. His lone blemish came with controversy, on a ball originally thought to hit off the left field wall for a double. Umpires signaled home run as FIU’s Eddie Silva halted at second, and after a lengthy conference, allowed the call to stand.
DeJuneas earned his first collegiate save with three perfect frames in relief, striking out six. The freshman entered with two on and no outs in the seventh, and proceeded to mow down the next nine batters in ordered, striking out four of the first five he faced.
Brock Deatherage scored the Pack’s first run, drawing a leadoff walk to start the first, and scoring on Bubby Riley’s double off the left field wall. Riley posted the Pack’s only multi-hit effort on the game, finishing 2-for-3. Logan Ratledge provided the winning run, reaching after a hit by pitch to open the third, and crossing on Andrew Knizner’s RBI single through the left side.
NC State returns to action on Sunday at 2 p.m. to meet Coastal Carolina at Springs Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C.
