RALEIGH – On a night when the NC State women's soccer team honored two of its all-time greats, the Wolfpack dropped a 4-1 decision to visiting No. 6 Clemson Thursday evening at Dail Soccer Field.
Prior to the match, NC State celebrated the careers of Charmaine Hooper and the late Robin Morlock. Hooper remains the Pack's all-time leader in points (145), goals (58), and shots (349), having led NC State to 65 wins in four seasons, one Atlantic Coast Conference title, and four NCAA Tournament appearances. Morlock was a strong contributor between the years of 1993-96, and tragically passed away in June 1998 in an auto accident.
Dozens of former NC State women's soccer players were in attendance at the match to celebrate the accomplishments of their teammates.
Clemson (12-2-1, 6-2-0 ACC) struck early, scoring goals in the 18th and 24th minutes to take a 2-0 advantage. Abby Jones gave the Tigers the lead on a rebound and Catrina Atanda ripped a hard shot from distance to make it 2-0.
Jeni Erickson then scored on a corner in the 38th minute to give Clemson a 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
On the other side of the intermission, Samantha Staab made it 4-0 on a well-executed corner in the 58th minute with assists from Katie Sprouse and Claire Wagner.
Dayna Tomayko pulled one back for the Wolfpack (4-12-0, 0-7-0) in the 84th minute, scoring on an impressive strike from 20 yards out which hit the underside of the crossbar and found its way in. Her first goal of the season was assisted by teammate Rachel Cox.
The Wolfpack outshot the Tigers in the second half by a 5-4 margin.
"Tonight I thought our players were good," said NC State head coach Tim Santoro. "Our goalkeeping position could have been better, and they know that. If you hold a team like No. 6 Clemson to just 12 shots and outshoot them in the second half, that speaks to doing a better job of keeping the ball and defending in the pockets in front of the back line, which caused us problems in the first half.
"I asked our players to fix a few things and they were very good in the second half."
NC State returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 24 when it hosts Louisville on Senior Day. The match will kick off at 1 p.m. from Dail Soccer Field and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
