RALEIGH – The NC State women's soccer team dropped a close 1-0 decision to Louisville on Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Field. Prior to the match, NC State recognized the careers of the seven graduating student-athletes on its roster.
"I thought our group was solid," NC State head coach Tim Santoro said. "I told them that the process of the game was good even though the result was bad. I thought that everyone who stepped onto the field for us today was pretty solid. We were just hoping for a little extra from someone around the goal and didn't get it."
NC State (4-13-0, 0-8-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) recorded a 7-6 advantage in shots in the first half, but it was Louisville (8-7-2, 4-4-1) who found the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes when Jill Vetere smashed a rocket of a shot from 30 yards away into the top corner.
Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Wootten had a strong outing in goal, making five saves. Her Louisville counterpart Taylor Bucklin was tested four times throughout the 90 minutes and was able to prevent the Wolfpack from finding the scoresheet.
Five wolves attempted shots in the match, with sophomore Cailyn Boch leading the way with four. Senior Caroline Gentry was not far behind with three, while teammates Hannah Keogh, Jackie Stengel, and Taylor Porter each registered scoring attempts.
"It was an even match," Santoro added. "It was disappointing that we didn't do a little more offensively, but this team is just a little short in knowing how to find ways to get on top in these kind of games.
"The shots were pretty even; the possession was pretty even; I even thought in the first half we were a bit better. We talk all the time about playing a full 90 minutes but it's still a tough thing for us to find right now."
NC State will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at home against current No. 2 Virginia. The match will kick off at Dail Soccer Field beginning at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN3. Wednesday's match was originally scheduled to be played in Raleigh on Oct. 2, but was postponed due to heavy sustained rain in the area.
