BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 27 NC State men’s tennis team fell 4-3 to No. 30 Harvard in its consolation match at the ITA Kickoff Weekend. The match featured some good individual wins for the Pack, but its comeback attempt fell a few serves short.

Despite losing the doubles point, No. 19 Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster walked away with a big victory over No. 7 Dennis Nguyen and Brian Yueng 7-6 (7-3). The duo from NC State avenged an earlier loss to the Harvard team at the 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.

Harvard took a 3-1 advantage with victories at the third and sixth singles. The Wolfpack was facing an uphill climb with Harvard only needing one victory to clinch. Senior Austin Powell overcame a first-set loss to comeback and defeat No. 57 Dennis Nguyen 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Robbie Mudge would also win his singles match to tie the overall match moments later.

Beck Bond and Alex Steinroeder’s match was the deciding point. Bond would have a chance to win at 5-4 but would be edged out 7-5 in the third set after a big final push from Steinroeder.

Up Next: On Friday, Jan. 30, the Pack will travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for a doubleheader against Jackson State and Middle Tennessee State. State will open up at 10:00 a.m. against Jackson State, then play again at 3 p.m. against Middle Tennessee State.
