MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Wolfpack men’s tennis team routed Jackson State (7-0) and Middle Tennessee State (7-0) in Friday’s doubleheader to improve to 5-2 overall. The matches featured freshman Shoti Meparidze’s dual season debut and first singles victory as a NC State student-athlete.
Jackson State:
The Pack handily defeated the Tigers 7-0. Austin Powell and Simon Norenius started in the No. 1 doubles spot for the first time this season, while Beck Bond and Meparidze played in their first dual season doubles match as a team. Both duos defeated their opponents by a score of 6-0 to claim the doubles point for State.
In singles, the Pack leapt out to an advantage on all four courts, the team would not look back as they cruised to straight-set victories on all four courts. Horton and Dempster would wrap up the match with two more straight-set wins as both picked up their second win of the season.
Meparidze got his first dual season start at No. 1 singles. The Tbilisi, Georgia native handled the top spot with ease as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jackson State’s Carlos Martinez.
Middle Tennessee State:
Another strong performance immediately following its first victory led to a 7-0 win over an experienced Middle Tennessee State squad.
Once again the Wolfpack got off to a hot start, winning its sixth doubles point of the season. No. 19 Robbie Mudge and Dempster were back in the No. 1 spot as they won 6-3 and inched closer to another mark in the record books. The duo now has 13 wins during the 2014-15 season and is just one win shy of cracking the top-10 list for most doubles wins in a year.
In singles play, The Pack was tested early as both Austin Powell and Robbie Mudge lost their first set to experienced Blue Raiders opponents. However, both seniors would rally and win the next two sets of their matches.
Norenius and Bond would handle their opponents early and win in straight sets, while Nick Horton and Thomas Weigel would also win their matches.
Up Next:
The Pack will travel to Columbia, S.C., on Sunday, Feb. 8 for a matchup against No. 29 South Carolina. It will be the third weekend the Pack has been on the road.
