RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State remained undefeated on the season by completing the sweep against Sunday's doubleheader opponents, Michigan State and NC Central. The Wolfpack won nine singles and four doubles matches on Sunday.
Michigan State 4-1
NC State started strong by winning the doubles point. Austin Powell and Simon Norenius defeated Michigan State's Mac Roy and Mike Dube 6-1. After Ian Dempster and Robbie Mudge dropped their first doubles match of the season, Nick Horton and Thomas Weigel rallied to win 7-5 and claim the doubles point.
For the second consecutive match, Powell picked up NC State's first singles point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 76 Gijs Linders. Immediately following Powell's match, Norenius completed a second-set comeback against Jasper Koenen to win in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). Norenius' win gave the Pack a commanding 3-1 lead in the overall match.
Mudge would clinch the win for the Pack with a three set victory over Brett Forman. Beck Bond and Weigel's matches were left unfinished.
NC Central 7-0
For the third time this season, NC State won the doubles point. The duo of Horton and Weigel won their second consecutive match with a 6-1 win. Mudge and Dempster would follow with a 6-4 win.
In singles play, Weigel scored the second point of the match for the Pack and improved to 3-0 on the season with a straight-set win. Horton won his first singles match of the season to give the Pack a 3-0 advantage, while Powell clinched the win moments later with a 6-4, 6-3 win. Powell concluded his weekend with three singles and two doubles victories.
Mudge, Bond and Dempster would close out the day with straight-set victories as the Pack improved to 3-0 on the season.
Choboy's Comments: "We weren't happy with some of our focus in this morning's match. We were too up and down. We won the match but we didn't win the way we wanted. In the second match, we came out with a much more consistent focus which was good. NC Central came in ready to play and our guys had a good hard-fought match. It was something we needed."
Up Next: NC State will travel to Berkley, Calif., for ITA Kick-Off Weekend. They will open play against No. 21 Mississippi State. Depending on the result of the first match, they will play either No. 15 California or No. 29 Harvard. The Pack will go almost two months before its next home match.
