NC State Narrowly Falls to Mississippi State 4-3

BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 27 NC State men's tennis team dropped its first match of the season to No. 21 Mississippi State. Despite building an early lead, the Wolfpack (3-1) was unable to capitalize as it fell 4-3.
Quick Start: The match took a familiar turn for the Pack as the team built a commanding 2-0 lead for the fourth time this season. Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-4) victory to give the Pack its first point. Mudge would then win the first singles match of the day with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 win over No. 63 Tassilo Schmid. His singles and doubles victories would serve as the highlights of the match for State.
Turning Point: The Pack seemed to have control on the match with Nick Horton, Beck Bond and Thomas Weigel leading in the third set of their matches. However, Mississippi State would rattle off three-straight victories to force Weigel and Bond into must-win matches. Weigel would finish off his opponent 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to tie the match, but Bond's comeback attempt would ultimately fall short as he was defeated 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
Up Next: The Wolfpack have a quick turnaround as it will face No. 30 Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. EST in a consolation match. Harvard was defeated by No. 15 Cal in the first match of day.
