RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State track and field athletes won three events and four Raleigh Relay records fell on the first day of competition at the annual meet at the Wolfpack’s Paul Derr Track.
Junior Nathaniel Williams shattered his personal best and put a scare into the eight-year-old school record in the men’s discus with a mark of 189-feet, 1-inch, topping his previous best by more than 18 feet. He was just 18 inches away from the school mark set by James Rowell in 2004.
“That was a big-time throw for us,” said head coach Rollie Geiger. “What we are looking for from an early meet like this is getting marks that will get our athletes to the NCAA Regionals, with a chance to advance from there.
“Nate’s mark certainly gets him safely to that point.”
State junior Kris Kornegay-Gober, the ACC indoor champion and an NCAA indoor qualifier in the high jump, set a personal best and broke a 21-year-old meet record with a mark of 7-feet, 3-inches in his event. He was just three inches shy of the school record set by Omarr Dixon in 1996.
Kornegay-Gober’s mark was a half-inch better than the previous meet record set by George Mason’s Tony Barton in 1991.
Senior Brittany Hampton, who holds the school record in the women’s discus, won that event by a comfortable margin with a throw of 167-feet, 6-inches. Redshirt freshman teammate Tremanisha Taylor was third at 165-feet, 5-inches.
Taylor was also second in the women’s shot put with a throw of 51-feet, 2 ¼-inches. Senior Lawanda Henry was fourth.
Three other meet records fell on a picture-perfect afternoon and evening at the Derr Track. UNC Greensboro runner Paul Chelimo broke the meet record in the 1,500 meters, as did the next four finishers. Chelimo’s mark of 3:40.25 came close but did not break the Derr Track record of 3:39.75 set by former world champion Abdi Bile of George Mason, set in 1987.
Clemson’s Alyssa Kulik broke the meet record in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:12.25. NC State’s Erin Mercer, an outdoor All-ACC selection with Kulik last year, was third in the even. Wolfpack junior Brian Himelright was also third in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.
High school runner Wesley Frazier of Raleigh’s Ravenscroft High broke her own meet record in the girls 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:21.84, one of the fastest times posted by a high school runner in the nation this spring.
“It’s was the perfect day for setting records,” Geiger said. “It was good and warm in the afternoon for the throwers and jumpers and it was cool in the evening for the runners. We couldn’t asked for a better day.”
The Wolfpack distance runners fare well under the lights of Derr Track. Seniors Bobby Moldovan and Sandy Roberts were fifth and sixth in the men’s 5,000 meters, while freshman Joanna Thompson was ninth in the women’s 5,000 meters with a time of 16:19.69. Senior Andie Cozzarelli and redshirt freshman Laura Hoer were close behind, finishing 11th and 13th, respectively.
Wolfpack senior Taylor Graham had a personal best and qualified for Saturday’s finals in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.43 seconds.
The meet continues on Saturday at the Paul Derr Track, with the first event starting at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free for all spectators.
