RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State softball (7-5) had an offensive explosion tonight against Georgetown at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium during the Wolfpack Challenge, 9-2.
Bethaney Wells posted an excellent day at the plate for the Wolfpack, going 3-for-4 with 4 RBI. Caitlin Dent went 2-for-3 for the Pack as well.
Morgan Peeler got the start for State in the circle. She went three innings and surrendered two earned runs off of five hits, but was relieved in the third frame by freshman Emily Weiman. Weiman threw the duration of the contest and picked up the win, giving up no earned runs in four innings of work.
Georgetown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off of two singles.
In the bottom half of the first inning, Toni Ann Williford reached on a Hoya error and moved into scoring position after Scout Albertson drew a one-out walk. Bethaney Wells then reached on another Hoya miscue to load the bases for Sara Lippard. With a 1-2 count, Georgetown's starting pitcher was called for an illegal pitch, which allowed Williford to score and pull State even with the Hoyas at 1-1.
Dent notched a base hit in the second and Renada Davis followed with a walk. Next, Williford reached base on an error for the second time in the game to load the bases for Albertson. Georgetown starter Mackensey Carter was able to fan her, though, to end the inning with the score remaining tied at 1-1.
The Hoyas posted two hits in the third inning and took a 2-1 lead.
Wells knotted the score at two when she led off the third frame with a solo home run, her second of the day. A few batters later, Davis singled to drive in Lippard, who previously drew a walk, to increase State's lead to 3-2.
Williford opened the fourth by hitting a triple, the first of her career. She came around to score on an RBI-single by Wells. Next, Jones lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Albertson and give State a 5-2 lead after four innings of play.
The Pack notched three more runs off of three hits and two Hoya errors in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 8-2 lead.
Kirsty Grant led off the sixth inning with a double came around to score during a first and third play to make it 9-2 in favor of the Wolfpack.
State softball returns to action tomorrow 1 and 3:30 p.m. in the Wolfpack Challenge. The Pack will battle Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. and take on Kent State at 3:30 p.m.
