
Softball Drops High Scoring Doubleheader

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State softball (6-7) dropped a doubleheader today versus Pittsburgh and Kent State in the Wolfpack Challenge at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.
The Pack dropped the first contest versus Pitt 5-2 and the second versus Kent State by a score of 15-8.
In the second game, Katie Mansilla went 3-for-4 while scoring two runs. Caitlin Dent blasted her second home run of the day in the matchup and went 1-for-3 with three RBI.
Morgan Peeler took the loss in the circle for the Wolfpack, surrendering eight runs off of seven hits in three innings of work.
In the bottom of the first, Mansilla put the Pack on the board by notching an inside the park home run.
Kent State notched two runs in the second inning off of two hits and two walks.
Chelsea Tate led off the second with a double, but was thrown out at the plate on Landon Warren's fielders choice. The Pack continued to rally, though, as Landon Warren, Renada Davis and Mansilla reached base consecutively. Toni Ann Williford came through for the Pack with two outs, striking a single to score Warren and bring the Pack even with the Golden Flashes at 2-2.
In the third inning, Kent State's offense exploded. They scored six runs off of four hits in the frame and took an 8-2 lead over the Wolfpack.
Bethaney Wells ripped her third home run of the 2012 campaign in the bottom of the the third to cut the Kent State lead to 8-3.
Senior Jade Hennig came on in relief of Peeler in the fourth and ended up giving up seven runs in four innings of work off of eight hits.
The State offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning, posting four runs off of three hits. Davis and Mansilla each notched base knocks, and Dent then smashed her second home run of the day, a three-run shot, to cut the Kent State lead to one at 8-7.
The Golden Flashes notched three hits and scored one run in the top of the sixth, but Hennig was able to induce a ground ball that Davis and Mansilla turned for a double play. She then struck out the final batter of the inning to send the Pack into the bottom half of the inning with momentum.
The Wolfpack offense put runs on the board again in the sixth. Davis belted her second hit of the game, a double, and came around to score on a single by Williford. After six innings of play, State trailed the Golden Flashes 9-8.
Kent State then scored six runs off of four hits, including two triples, and one error in the top of the seventh inning to extend their advantage to 15-8 over the Wolfpack.
In the first game versus Pittsburgh, NC state fell 5-2, scoring both of its runs off of solo home runs.
Caitlin Dent and Davis each blasted their first home run of the season and accounted for all of the Pack's scoring in the contest.
Emily Weiman took the loss in the circle after surrendering four earned runs off of four hits. She struck out eight Pitt batters and walked three.
The Panthers posted four runs off of three hits in the top of the first inning, capped off by a Kelly Hmiel three-run home run. Weiman, though, fought back despite the initial setback and fanned two Pitt batters in the inning.
Dent blasted her first home run of the 2012 season in the second, putting the Pack on the board. After two innings, State trailed by a score of 5-1.
In the bottom of the third, Renada Davis smashed a solo home run, the first of her young career to pull the Wolfpack within three at 5-2.
Dent and Tate each notched base hits in the fourth inning, but the Pack was unable to plate a run. After four innings of play, the score remained 5-2 in favor of the Panthers.
Warren led off the fifth by drawing a walk and then stole second. She moved to third on the sacrifice bunt by Katie Mansilla, Williford was unable to score her, so the score remained 5-2.
State softball returns to action tomorrow in the final game of the Wolfpack Challenge at 1 p.m.
