Softball Defeats St. John's

ATHENS, Ga. - NC State earned its first win of the season by defeating St. John's in the Red and Black Showcase in Athens, Ga. by a score of 7-6.
Landon Warren paced the Pack offensively, going 3-4 with a single, double and a home run.
Emily Weiman picked up the victory in the circle, surrendering two earned runs off of 11 hits, striking out six in the process.
St. John's took a 3-0 lead in in the bottom of the first inning off of three hits and three Wolfpack errors.
Bethaney Wells led off the second frame with a line drive double and advanced to third, but the Pack was unable to push the run across, and the score remained 3-0 in favor of the Red Storm.
In the third inning, Weiman allowed two singles, but was able to work out of the jam and keep the Pack deficit at 0-3.
Warren led off the fourth inning with a double, and then scored on a triple by Renada Davis, the first of her career. Leah Jones was then hit by a pitch, and came around to score on a solid double by Kirsty Grant. Caitlin Dent then notched a single to plate Grant and take a 4-3 lead.
Weiman struck out two in the fourth inning to preserve the 4-3 Wolfpack lead.
Warren belted her first home run of the season to lead off the fifth inning and push the score to 5-3 in favor of the Pack.
St. John's notched three base hits in the bottom of the fifth and scored one run to pull the score to 5-4. To end the inning, Grant notched her third pick-off of the day.
Katie Mansilla reached in the sixth and came around to score on a single by Warren, her third hit of the contest. After the top of the frame, the Pack held a 6-4 advantage.
Jones started the top of the seventh with a base hit, and was replaced by pinch runner Kelsey Hoover, who came around to score on a Katie Mansilla single. After the top of the seventh, NC State held a 7-4 advantage.
Weiman surrendered two runs in the bottom of the seventh but retired the last two Red Storm batters to preserve her first victory at NC State.
The Pack returns to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. against Campbell and then at 7 p.m. versus Army.
