GREENVILLE, N.C. -
NC State softball (20-19) took on East Carolina (29-15) today in Greenville, N.C., and earned a doubleheader sweep from the Pirates by a score of 2-1 and 5-4.
Bridget Desbois and Alyssa Ishibashi posted 2-for-4 efforts for the Pack offensively, and Landon Warren notched two singles in the victory.
Morgan Peeler earned the start in the circle for NC State, giving up only two earned runs off of seven hits in the complete 10 inning effort while striking out six ECU batters.
The Pack struck first in the second game of the twinbill, notching one run in the top of the first inning. East Carolina starting pitcher Faith Sutton surrendered four singles to the Wolfpack, but the squad was only able to push one run across on a base hit by Bethaney Wells.
ECU evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame off of two base hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly.
In the third inning, East Carolina took a 3-1 lead thanks to an RBI double by first baseman Sissy Jimenez.
Ishibashi pushed the score to 3-2 by smashing her second homerun of the season in the fifth inning. Later in the frame, Alyssa Allbritten roped a double in the gap, which scored Toni Ann Williford to knot the score at three.
Peeler held the Pirates scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning, pushing the game went into extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, Warren reached base on a fielder's choice and stole second to move into scoring position. Allbritten, however, struck out to end the inning with the score remaining 3-3.
The Pirates put runners at second and third in the bottom of the ninth for Alex Fieldhouse, but Peeler got her to strike out swinging to end the inning, preserving the tie.
In the tenth inning, the Wolfpack placed a runner, Samantha Melton, on second base per international tiebreaker rules. Desbois moved her to third with a nicely placed sacrifice bunt. The next batter, Alicia Abbott laced a double over the ECU outfield's head, plating Melton and Breanna Andrews to give the Pack a 5-3 lead.
ECU notched a run in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Jimenez to make the score 5-4 in favor of the Pack.
In the first game of the doubleheader, NC State utilized Wells' seventh homerun of the season to beat East Carolina 2-1.
Kayla Cox earned the win for the Pack, giving up one run off of three hits and striking out six Pirate batters in the complete game effort.
The Wolfpack put two runners on in the third inning behind a walk by Chelsea Tate and a single by Ishibashi. Warren then posted an excellent at-bat, seeing a total of 10 pitches, but was unable to put the ball in play. At the end of the inning, the game remained scoreless.
Wells got the Pack on the board in the fourth inning by knocking her team-leading seventh homerun of the 2011 season, a two-run blast. The round-tripper, hit off of East Carolina ace Toni Paisley, was only the third homer given up by Paisley all season.
East Carolina pulled within one run, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jill Jelnick drew a bases loaded walk.
NC State returns to action this weekend in College Park, Md., against ACC foe Maryland for a three-game series. The Pack will take on the Terrapins in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m., then a single game on Sunday at noon.
