CLEARWATER, Fla. - NC State (2-3) finished up play at the USF Wilson-DeMarini Tournament Sunday morning with a 6-4 loss versus Marshall (2-3).
Starting pitcher Jade Hennig put together a strong start in her first game in the circle for the Pack, holding the Thundering Herd hitless through five innings of work before surrendering a base hit to Alianna Telles in the sixth. In all, Hennig gave up only two hits and no earned runs, and struck out three.
Leadoff hitter Alysaa Ishibashi started the game with a base hit and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Toni Ann Williford. Alyssa Allbritten then followed with a walk, and Bridget Desbois notched a single to load the bases with one out. Alicia Abbott pulled through in the end, hitting a line drive single to score Ishibashi and Allbritten, giving the Pack a 2-0 lead.
Marshall pulled to within one run at 2-1 in the fourth inning after the first batter reached due to a Wolfpack defensive error and came around to score on a sacrifice fly.
The Pack threatened again in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Breanna Andrews drew a two out walk and Chelsea Tate notched a single to put a runner in scoring position for Ishibashi, who nailed a screaming liner to the outfield that was caught, ending the inning.
In the fifth, Williford and Allbritten reached base thanks to back-to-back singles, and Desbois drew a walk to load the bases for Caitlin Dent. Dent then lifted a deep fly ball, which scored Williford from third. The next batter, Abbott, sent Andie Williamson's pitch deep, plating Samantha Melton who was pinch running for Allbritten to extend the NC State lead to 4-1.
The Herd struck again in the sixth inning, making the score 4-2 thanks to a sacrifice fly before knotting the score at four-all following a two RBI base hit off of Kayla Cox, on in relief of Hennig.
Marshall took the lead in the top of the seventh inning following three-straight base hits to begin the frame, earning a 6-4 advantage.
The Wolfpack returns to action next weekend in the Georgia Softball Classic in Athens, Ga., against North Dakota State on Friday, Feb. 18 at 9 a.m
