CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. A Dani Weir walk off shot in the bottom of the ninth lifted Boston College past NC State, 2-1, on Friday, April 24 at Shea Field. The loss sends the Pack to 20-24 (3-13 ACC), while the Eagles climb to 17-26 (3-10 ACC).
Mendy McKenzie (8-12) took the loss while fanning eight and allowing six hits. Taylor Peyton (10-11) got the win for BC.
Alyssa Ishibashi led State at the plate, collecting two of the team’s five hits.
The Pack had a chance to get something going in the top of the second as Stephanie Call led off with a double and Toni Ann Williford drew a walk, but both were left stranded.
BC had the bases loaded in the bottom half of the second, but McKenzie got the big punch out when she needed it. Amy Tunstall singled through left side, Gemma Ypparila got hit by a pitch and Taylor Peyton walked to load the bases. But McKenzie got Carolyn Jones chasing to end the inning.
State loaded the bases in the top of the third, but couldn’t cash it in. Ishibashi sliced a base hit into left, and Krystal Hawkins came on to run in her place. A Lauren Peters sac-bunt pushed Hawkins to second before Alyssa Allbritten singled up the middle to put runners on the corners with one out. A free pass to Claudia Cooper then loaded the bags, but Call got frozen on a called-third strike and Allison Presnell grounded out to first.
The Eagles put two on in the bottom of the seventh as Peyton drew a one-out walk, and Brittany Wilkins lined a base hit into left, but McKenzie induced an inning-ending grounder back to the circle from Irene Delagrammaticas.
The Wolfpack got one run in the top of the eighth, mounting a two-out rally. Call struck out with two outs but took first on a wild pitch, advancing to second shortly thereafter on another wild pitch. Presnell then walked and Call took third when Peyton was called for an illegal pitch. Williford sent the very next pitch to third, which Wilkins booted, allowing Call to score the first run of the evening.
Three free passes and a hit allowed the Eagles to knot the score at 1-all in the bottom of the eighth. Weir walked, Blair Destito singled up the middle, and Ypparila walked to load the bases. Another walk, this time to Peyton, tied the score.
Weir ended it all in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out blast over the wall in left-center.
NC State and Boston College will wrap up the series with a doubleheader tomorrow. Game one is slated to begin at 11 a.m., with game two following around 1 p.m. Live stats for both games will be available via GoPack.com, and ACC Select will offer a live video broadcast.
