COLLEGE PARK, Md. NC State dropped a 7-6 ACC contest to Maryland in eight innings on Sunday, March 29. The loss sends the Pack to 16-13 (3-3 ACC) on the year, while the Terrapins move to 16-16 (2-4 ACC).
Lindsay Campana (8-6) suffered the loss in five innings of work. She started the game and left, only to reenter in the bottom of the seventh. Mendy McKenzie tossed 2.1 innings of relief. Both pitchers were hit with a combined three unearned runs.
Sarah Dooley (8-6) picked up the win.
Kristine Bechtholdt and Claudia Cooper each had two hits and two RBIs, while Alyssa Ishibashi added two hits of her own.
Michelle Takeda put the Terrpains up early with a two-run single in the bottom of the first, but Cooper cut the lead in half with an RBI hit in the top of the third.
State eventually took a 6-2 lead with a five-run top of the fifth. Ishibashi got things started with a leadoff double, and Cooper and Bridget Desbois punched through back-to-back RBI singles. A passed ball allowed another run to score before Bechtholdt cranked her sixth home run of the season over the wall in left field.
A two-run single from Breanna Shaw sliced the Pack’s lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth, before a Kathy McLaughlin RBI triple and Vangie Galindo RBI single knotted the score at 6-all in the bottom of the sixth.
Maryland took advantage of a crucial error at the start of the bottom of the eighth, grabbing the one run it needed to end the game. Lydia Fowler reached on an error and Lauren Ghent came on to run in her place. Ghent quickly took second on a sac-bunt before scoring on an Alex Schultz game winning pinch-hit single up the middle.
NC State will begin a nine-game home stand on Tuesday, March 31, with a doubleheader against Elon. Action will start at 4 p.m. at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. GoPack.com will carry live stats for all of the action.
