RALEIGH, N.C. A nine-run offensive explosion in the bottom of the third led NC State past Elon in six innings, 10-2, in the first of two games at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium on Tuesday, March 31.
The win moves the Pack to 17-13, while the Phoenix falls to 9-15.
Lindsay Campana (9-6) picked up the win on four innings of work, while Mendy McKenize tossed two hitless frames of relief. Pam DelPizzo (2-3) got hit with the loss, allowing five earned runs. Melanie Helterbran got touched for five earned runs of her own in relief.
Five Wolfpack players drove in runs, with Bridget Desbois knocking in four on a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Eliza Jacobellis and Alyssa Ishibashi each recorded two RBIs, while Lauren Peters and Claudia Cooper had one a piece. Ishibashi was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3.
Patti Weber put Elon up with a two-run shot to left-center in the top of the third. Jacqueline Gonzalez struck out but reached when the third strike was bobbled and the throw to first sailed high. Weber then sent one over the wall.
That lead didn’t last long at all however, as the Pack lit up Elon for nine runs on seven hits in a colossal bottom of the third. Ishibashi got it all started with a single down the third base line and a pitch hit Allison Presnell. Alyssa Allbritten then loaded the bases with a base hit up the middle, before Cooper dropped an RBI single into right field. Desbois then gave the Pack the lead with a bases clearing laser of a double down the third base line.
At that point Elon lifted DelPizzo in favor of Helterbran, who issued a free pass to Kristine Bechtholdt, an RBI single to Peters and a two-run double to Jacobellis. Ishibashi then demolished a two-run home run, her first dinger of the year, over the wall in left-center to make it 9-2.
McKenzie took over in the circle for the Wolfpack in the top of fifth, retiring all six batters she faced and striking out the side in the top of the sixth.
The Pack got the 10th run it needed to end the game early in the bottom of the sixth. Allbritten mashed a leadoff double to the wall in center, later scoring on a Desbois single.
NC State and Elon will begin game two of today’s twin bill shortly.
