RALEIGH, N.C. Mendy McKenzie tossed a one-hitter and the Wolfpack offense pounded out seven hits as NC State downed Siena, 6-0, on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
The Pack got several strong performances at the plate with Hanna Ojeda going for 3-for-3 and Bridget Desbois picking up two hits and three RBIs. Alyssa Ishibashi also added a hit and two RBIs of her own.
McKenzie (1-2) fanned 10 batters en route to picking up her first victory of the season. Amanda Filippazzo (0-1) took the loss.
Desbois put the Pack up 3-0 with a homer in the bottom of the first. Ishibashi walked and Alyssa Allbritten took first on a fielder’s choice before Desbois hit her first long ball of the season to right-center.
The Saints threatened to score in the top of the fourth, but got nothing to show for it. Jenny McNulty drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sac-bunt and later took third on a wild pitch. But McKenzie got Lauren Weingart to line out to third, ending the possibility of any damage.
State pushed its lead to 6-0 by tacking on three runs with two down in the bottom of the fourth. Ojeda singled to left and Landon Warren followed with an infield base hit towards third. A Siena error at short with Lauren Peters at the plate loaded the bases for the Pack, and Ojeda hurried home to score on a wild pitch. Ishibashi then lined a single into left, knocking in Warren and Peters.
The win moves the Pack to 3-6 on the young season, while the Saints fall to 0-2.
NC State will return to the field this weekend, Feb. 27-March 1, when it hosts the Wolfpack Challenge at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. Buffalo, Canisius, College of Charleston, Notre Dame and St. John’s round out the tournament field. State will play five games across the three day spread, and live stats will be available via GoPack.com for each game of the tournament.
