CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. Lindsay Campana (1-3) struck out seven and held No. 9 Cal to just one earned run and four hits as the Golden Bears topped NC State, 2-1, in eight innings at the Cathedral City Classic on Friday, Feb. 20.
Allison Presnell went 2-for-3 with her first home run for the Wolfpack offense, while Bridget Desbois and Hannah Ojeda also supplied hits. The Pack just could not seem to capitalize with runners on base, stranding eight in all.
Marissa Drewrey (7-1) picked up the win in the circle for Cal.
Two Golden Bear errors and a hit-by-pitch helped the Pack load the bases in the top of the first, but nothing materialized as Kristine Bechtholdt flew out to center to end the inning.
Cal struck in the bottom of the first, mounting an early 1-0 lead when Gina Leomiti singled to left center and scored Jamia Reid. Reid had reached via a walk before swiping second and taking third on a wild pitch.
Presnell clocked a solo shot to left in the top of the fourth, tying the action at 1-all.
That score would remain until Cal got its shot with the international tiebreaker in the bottom of the eighth. Nikki Schrey was placed on second and instantly took third on a wild pitch, and Elia Reid closed the book on the game with an RBI base hit into right center.
The loss sends NC State to 2-5 on the year, while Cal climbs to 10-1.
NC State will play its final game at the Cathedral City Classic tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 21. The Pack will take on No. 6 UCLA at 11 pm EST.
