RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's track and field and cross country program has signed four standout distance runners to national letters of intent. Lauren Doherty (Cambridge, Ontario, Canada), Jordan Jenkins (McSherrystown, Pa.), Julia Kick (Kelheim, Germany) and Erin Mercer (Peninsula, Ohio) all signed to run with the Pack. All four recruits will be key to the future success of the women's cross country and track teams.
"This signing class carries on the tradition of NC State cross country and track and field by providing the complete package that we want in an athlete," head women's cross country and assistant track coach Laurie Henes said.
Doherty attends Galt Collegiate Institute in Ontario and is a member of the Canadian Junior National Cross Country Team. She finished second in the steeplechase at the 2008 Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Championships.
Jenkins competes at New Oxford High School and was the runner-up of the Pennsylvania State Championship meet in the 3,200m. She also finished 13th at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in the 5,000m. Her current career-best time in the 3,200m is a 10:45.
Kick competes in Germany at the Johan Nepomuk Gymnasium and was one of the top juniors in the distance events. She competed at the steeplechase at the 2008 World Junior Championships. Her current career-best time in the steeple is a 10:33.45, and she also posted strong times with a 2:11.75 (800m) and 4:25.10 (1,500m).
Mercer attends Woodridge High School and was third in the Ohio Cross Country State meet in 2008. She also was third in the 1,600m in the state meet that same year. She currently holds a career-best time of 5:05 in the mile.
Mercer is another athlete for the Wolfpack from Woodridge High School, joining some elite company in addition to current men's cross country runner Brian Himelright.
Bob Henes - Laurie's husband - attended Woodridge, and is is still the NC State school record holder in the 3,000m and 5,000m in addition earning three cross country All-American honors.
Katie Sabino, a two-time cross country All-American and three-time track and field All-American honoree, also attended Woodridge.
These recruits compliment the signing of Karimah Shepherd, the nation's leader in the triple and long jump. Shepherd recently was interviewed by dyestat.com about her career and attending NC State.
