RADFORD, Va. Five extra-base hits and three home runs propelled Radford past NC State, 4-1, in the second game of a road doubleheader on Tuesday, April 8. NC State falls to 23-19 with the defeat, while the Highlanders climb to 27-11.
Mendy McKenzie (11-6) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on five hits. Kellie Snooks (3-0) got the win in relief for Radford, while Ashley Taylor picked up her sixth save. Snooks tossed 4.1 innings and allowed just two hits, while Taylor went 1.2 with one hit allowed.
Alyssa Allbritten blasted a two-out solo home run in the top of the first, her seventh on the year, putting the Pack ahead early. However it would prove to be the red and white’s lone score of the game.
Mackenzie Mangum walked on four-straight balls to start the top of the second, and Radford head coach Mickey Dean had seen enough of starting pitcher Rebecca Whalley, lifting her from the circle in favor of Snooks.
Snooks nailed her first opponent, Bridget Desbois, with a pitch, but struck out the next three batters.
A two-run stroke from Shannon Keefe put the Highlanders on top in the bottom of the third. Ashley Taylor stroked a leadoff double to deep center and came around on Keefe’s dinger.
Vicki Madden increased Radford’s lead with a one-run homer to straightaway-center in the bottom of the fourth, and Cassie Rhodes pushed the score to 4-1 with a leadoff dinger in the bottom of the sixth. Lindsay Campana replaced McKenzie shortly thereafter.
State will return to the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium this weekend for a three-game ACC set against Maryland. The Pack and Terrapins will play two games on Saturday, April 12 beginning at 1 p.m., before bringing the series to a close with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 13.
Despite not serving as the last home game of the year for the Pack, Sunday will serve as Senior Day with festivities being held prior to first pitch.
