RALEIGH, N.C. Alyssa Allbritten punched an RBI single to center with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, handing NC State a 1-0 victory in its rubber match with Boston College on Sunday, March 16, at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. Lindsay Campana (9-10) kept the Eagles off the scoreboard en route to her second-straight complete game shutout, picking up seven strikeouts along the way. Taylor Peyton (6-5) took the loss for BC despite holding the Pack to just five hits.
“Lindsay did a great job of keeping Boston College off balance,” said head coach Lisa Navas. “It was just a matter of time before we finally broke through with some hits. The defense played great, and we got it done when we needed to.”
The win pushes the Wolfpack to 16-13 (2-1 ACC), while BC dips to 10-15 (1-2 ACC).
Alyssa Ishibashi scatted two hits for the Pack, while Peyton went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Eagles.
State had its first scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second. Ishibashi lined a base hit into center, and Allison Presnell reached on a fielder’s choice. Both base runners then moved up a bag on an illegal pitch, but Lisa Nentwig grounded out to short to end the inning.
BC threatened in the top of the fourth, but some defensive prowess kept them scoreless. Peyton drilled a double into left, and Renee Ramos followed with a hot shot towards short. Shanna Smith brought in Ramos’ bullet and made a heads up play, tossing the ball to Ishibashi at second, where Peyton was tagged out. Smith put a cork in the inning one batter later, when Angela Pandolfo sent another grounder her way.
Carley McNary and Allie Thunstrom placed back-to-back two-out singles in the top of the fifth for the Eagles, but Campana caught Amanda Booth swinging.
State had another shot at plating a run in the fifth, but wasn’t able to push anything across. Ishibashi singled through the left side, and Ashleigh Davis came on to run in her place. Davis then stole second, but Presnell and Mackenzie Mangum struck out, and Blair Harkey grounded out to short.
BC had runners on second and third with one down in the top of the sixth, but Campana and company worked its way out of the jam. Peyton slid a single through the left side, and took third on a Ramos base hit into right. Campana responded by fanning Pandolfo, and Amy Tunstall sent a routine grounder to short.
The Pack found a way to get it done in the bottom of the eighth. Harkey walked and Smith squeaked a base hit over Ramos’ head at second. Lauren Peters followed with a sac-bunt, putting runners on second and third with two down. Allbritten then dropped the game-winning base hit into shallow center, scoring Harkey and giving the Pack its 1-0 decision.
State will return to the field next weekend with another home ACC series at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium. The Pack will take on Virginia Tech three times, with a doubleheader on Friday, March 21 (1 p.m., 3 p.m.) and one contest on Saturday, March 22 (12 p.m.) Live stats for all three games will be offered on GoPack.com, while live video streaming of Friday’s second game and the Saturday contest will be available via ACC Select.
