Unattached Runners Dominate Pack Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State’s Brian Himelright and Angelina Blackmon, both running unattached, captured first place in the men’s and women’s races, respectively, Saturday at the Pack Invitational.
In the 5k women’s race, Blackmon won by nine seconds over runner-up Toni Salucci of adidas Raleigh. Blackmon, who completed her cross country eligibility but still has a season of track and field remaining, ran the course in 16:57. NC State’s Kara McKenna, a junior running unattached, was third at 17:18.
NC State did field an affiliated squad in the women’s race. Sophomore Krista Moss led the Pack, running 18th at 19:26. The remainder of the Wolfpack lineup was comprised of freshmen: Tiayonna Blackmon (41st, 21:57), Amanda Burger (42nd, 21:57), Andie Cozzarelli (43rd, 21:57), Caroline Kirby (44th, 21:57) and Lauren Bishop (45th, 21:58).
Duke won the team scoring with a perfect score of 15, followed by High Point (58 points), East Carolina (82), NC State (99) and North Carolina A&T (118).
Himelright, a freshman who is redshirting this season, ran the 5k course in the men’s race at 15:02, two seconds ahead of Duke’s Josh Lund. Himelright and Lund easily outdistanced the field. High Point’s Anthony Berkis was third, 14 seconds off Himelright’s winning pace.
NC State freshman Patrick Campbell, also running unattached, was fifth at 15:25, and Eyob Euyalem was eighth at 15:34. NC State ran only one affiliated runner in the race, redshirt-freshman Srini Iyer, who finished 18th at 16:17. NC State did not figure in the team scoring. Duke won the team championship with a score of 25 points, five ahead of runner-up High Point. Elon was third with 83 points, followed by East Carolina (99) and North Carolina A&T (110).
