BOCA RATON, Fla. - NC State softball won its final game of the FAU Classic with a 10-0 rout of Rutgers in five innings. The Wolfpack (12-7) collected nine hits, including six for extra bases, as a slumping offense found life on Sunday, Feb. 20 in Boca Raton, Fla. Jennifer Patterson went 3-for-3 with three doubles and five RBIs, both school records, to lead the offensive attack. Allison Cuculich hit a RBI double and Jen Chamberlin and Lee Hasper each collected RBIs in the win. Brooke Isley pitched three innings in relief to get the win and improve to 3-0 on the season, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
Sims started and pitched just two innings, allowing a single to start the game and striking out three Scarlet Knights (0-5) batters. Isley relieved Sims in the top of the third, and continued where Sims left off, allowing only one hit in the final three innings.
NC State got on the board quickly in the first, as Tess Corona snapped an eight game hitless streak with a leadoff single to right. After Hasper laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Corona to second, Sims was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Chamberlin hit a single up the middle that should have loaded the bases, but the Rutgers' centerfielder booted the ball, allowing Corona to score from second for a 1-0 lead.
Four more runs would cross home in the inning, as Cuculich answered with an RBI single to center to plate Sims. With runners on first and second, Patterson hit a bases clearing two-run double to left center for her first career double. Patterson would score from second as Lisa Nentwig reached on an error to the second baseman to make it 5-0.
The second inning started much like the second, with Corona hitting her first career triple down the right field line. Hasper continued her hot hitting in the FAU Classic with a RBI double to dead centerfield. Hasper has four RBIs in the tournament, with two doubles and a home run. Hasper would score to make it 7-0 on a Jen Chamberlin RBI double to left center before Patterson doubled to make it 8-0 with Chamberlin scoring from second.
The score would move to 10-0 in the top of the fourth, with Patterson hitting her school record third double in a single game to bring in Chamberlin and Hasper. Patterson finished with five RBIs in the game, tying a school record.
Christina Gillman (0-3) started and took the loss for Rutgers, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing eight hits and eight runs.
