RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State's Jennifer Patterson had the second game of a doubleheader off after catching seven innings in the Wolfpack's 7-3 over Campbell in game one. It's a good thing she stuck around for the night cap. Patterson hit a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning as NC State (14-7) rallied twice from one run down in the fourth and sixth innings in a 4-3 win over Campbell (10-7). Jen Chamberlin hit her team leading fourth home run of the season, and Heather Gelbard hit her second of the year as Shaina Ervin picked up her fifth win of the season.
Ervin (5-4) struck out 10 Fighting Camels and walked none, allowing just seven hits and three runs in the complete game. She singled in the bottom of the seventh to spark the tiebreaking, game winning rally, as Shanna Smith scored from third with one out and the bases juiced.
Patterson came to the plate to pinch hit after Allison Cuculich reached on an error and Miranda Ervin walked. Patterson worked deep into the count, then hit a smash to left center for the 4-3 win.
NC State took a 1-0 lead despite failing to record a hit in the third inning. Miranda Ervin reached second base on an error and Ashleigh Davis was the pinch runner. Reneé LaCroix laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt with two strikes to advance Davis to third, and she would later score on a wild pitch.
Campbell answered in the fourth on a lead off double by Megan Timpf and an RBI double by Chelsea Gates with two outs. Erica Willis hit a RBI single up the middle to make it 2-0 Fighting Camels.
Chamberlin got NC State back in it in the bottom half of the inning, homering to left center with a towering solo shot. Holly Harris hit an RBI single in the fifth to put Campbell back on top, 3-2.
With two down in the bottom of the sixth, NC State's Heather Gelbard came to the plate. Wanting to collect her thoughts and step out of the box, Gelbard tried to call for time from home plate umpire Cindy Arnold, but Arnold did not grant it. Gelbard put her hand back on the bat, and promptly hit the game tying home run to left.
After Shaina Ervin shut the door with a 1-2-3 seventh, she lead off the bottom half with her seeing eye single to left as NC State rallied for the win, its third straight.
NC State will travel to UNC Wilmington this weekend for the UNC Wilmington Tournament, Feb. 25-27.
