RALEIGH, N.C. - The Wolfpack women's tennis team opened part one of a two-match doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 19, against the UNC Wilmington Seahawks at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus. Serving as only the second home match of the spring, NC State collected a well-earned victory in dominating fashion, 7-0, while advancing to 3-1 on the season after three consecutive wins.
NC State started the match with a 1-0 lead by securing the doubles point with a clean sweep of all three doubles bouts for the second straight time. At No. 1 doubles, junior Barbara Orlay and freshman Elin Stahl Johansson got ahead early over Lindsey Hess and Sallie Kiser. The Wolfpack tandem never slowed down, collecting their fifth doubles win, 8-3. Sophomore Agustina Arechavaleta and senior Danielle Stadelmann kept the red and white rolling in the second doubles spot, besting Kristin Mears and Molly Moloney to secure their fourth win, 8-4. Freshman Julia Roach and senior Carmen Torres completed the Pack's triple play with a solid win over Cary Wyeth and Cassie Martin, 8-3.
At No. 1 singles, Orlay, currently ranked No. 121 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, took down Hess with ease, 6-3, 6-0. After collecting four straight decisions, Orlay now holds a 6-1 spring record with an undefeated slate in team dual matches. Lam played just as strong in the second dual match, downing Kiser in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to collect her second straight victory.
In the third singles match up, Johansson collected her first spring win over Mears. Offering up a solid performance, Johansson secured the win after only two sets, 7-6, 6-2. After sweeping the first frame, Stadlemann began to struggle against Moloney at No. 4 singles, as the Seahawk drew the match into a tiebreak. After collecting herself, Stadelmann bounced back and claimed the tiebreak point to seal the match, 6-0, 7-6(9-7).
Roach breezed through the afternoon's quickest match, downing Martin in two sets, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles. The Raleigh, N.C. native, whose solo victory against UNCW gives her five for the spring, has looked extremely impressive during her first season with the Pack. With the match already clinched, Arechavaleta collected her second win in a one-set bout with Wyeth, 8-3.
The NC State women's tennis team will return to the courts for its second match of the day against Radford at 6:30 p.m. Fans of NC State tennis are encouraged to attend this weekend's ribbon-cutting festivities to celebrate the grand opening of the J.W.
