
Softball Splits With Maryland in ACC Home Opener

RALEIGH, NC - NC State splits its Atlantic Coast Conference home opener versus visiting Maryland on Saturday, April 10, winning 5-0 in the first game and falling 1-0 in the second. The Wolfpack improved to 29-19 and 2-2 in the ACC, while the Terrapins moved to 21-15 and 1-1. NC State's freshman pitcher Abbie Sims (20-7) earned her 20th win on the season and freshman third baseman Jennifer Chamberlin hit her 11th career home run and second in as many games. For Maryland, catcher Rachel Greyson collected two hits and pitcher Jessica Aditays (9-7) earned her ninth win of the season.
Game One
NC State was held scoreless and in fact was held off the bases until lead-off batter freshman Heather Gelbard broke the streak with a single up the middle. Sims reached on an error by Maryland's first baseman and freshman catcher Miranda Ervin singled to the shortstop and scored Gelbard to give NC State its first run. With Sims and Ervin on the bases, Chamberlin shot a home run over the right center field fence to bring in three runs. Freshman Shaina Ervin walked and Maryland's Monica Cyphert retired the Pack's next three at bats to end the inning. Freshman Carolina Blount reached base as the leaoff batter after being hit by a pitch in the fifth inning. She would go on to score NC State's fifth run of the afternoon after a Gelbard walk and a single from Sims pushed her around the bases. Sims and the Pack defense held the Terps' offense at bay. The hurler struck out eight batters, allowed just three hits and had no walks in 24 batters. The defense had no errors as well, with Maryland reaching base just three times.
Game Two
The Wolfpack's Ervin pocketed eight strikeouts, but Maryland's bats were moving as it collected seven hits over the first five innings, which included three in the fifth inning. Greyson turned her own single into a run for herself after teammates loaded the bases and eventually walked her in to take the 1-0 lead. Ervin sent the final six batters packing to wrap the final two innings up. NC State made a push in the seventh inning after freshman center fielder Heather Jedrey walked to leadoff the inning. Sims moved Jedrey along with her second single of the day. Miranda Ervin stepped in the box and hit a single up the middle to Maryland's center fielder Natalie Grossman, who one hopped a throw to home plate where Greyson awaited a sprinting Jedrey at home plate for the final out. Ervin struckout eight Terps, had two walks and allowed seven hits in 28 faced. The Terps' Aditays collected six strikeouts, walked one and allowed five Wolfpack hits in 28 at bats.
NC State will host UNC Wilmington on Thursday, April 15, in a single game beginning at 3 p.m. The Wolfpack will then host Georgia Tech on Saturday, April 17, a 1 p.m. double header for the final home game of the season.
