RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State defeated visiting UNC Wilmington on Thursday, April 15, 6-1. The Wolfpack improved to 30-19 overall, while the Seahawks dropped to 17-29. NC State's freshman first baseman Allison Cuculich hit her third home run of the season and freshman pitcher Shaina Ervin earned her eighth win.
After a rocky start in the first inning, which led to UNC Wilmington's only score of the day, NC State kicked it up to score five runs in the second and third innings to take a commanding lead. The Seahawks leadoff batter, Christina Elmore, scored the first inning run after she slapped the ball through the left side. Four batters later, the designated player for UNCW, Meghan Mulcahy, scored Elmore on a single. NC State struck back in the second inning with two runs of its own. Freshman third baseman Jennifer Chamberlin singled to center field and was followed up with a home run over the left field fence by Cuculich to score the Pack's first two runs in the second inning.
Meanwhile, NC State didn't halt its scoring efforts. Freshman outfielder Heather Jedrey was walked to lead off the third inning before a sac bunt from Gelbard, a fielder's choice from Sims and back-to-back singles by catcher Miranda Ervin and Chamberlin eventually landed the Pack's third run. Ervin and Chamberlin went on to score as well. Gelbard and freshman Abbie Sims stepped in for two-straight hits in the top of the fifth to put runners on the bases. Sims tallied her seventh double of the season in her final at bat. Chamberlin earned a fielder's choice to advance pinch runner Laura Klem to score for the final run of the day.
Ervin pitched four innings and during that time struckout two batters, allowed one run off four hits and walked three after 17 faced. Sims entered to pitch the final three innings and finished with six strikeouts, one hit, three walks in 12 batters faced. For UNCW, pitcher Jamie Gostyla took the loss and moved to 9-10 on the year. NC State tagged a total of seven hits with just three strikeouts in 24 at bats.
NC State will host No. 22 Georgia Tech (35-11, 1-3 ACC) on Saturday in its final home double header of the inaugural season. The first game begins at 1 p.m. at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex in Raleigh and entry to the games is free.
