CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Mike Rogers pitched eight shutout innings, and Joe Gaetti homered and drove in two runs to lead NC State to a 7-1 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Virginia in the first game of a doubleheader at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
Rogers (9-1) scattered five hits without allowing a run in a sterling performance. He walked two and struck out four. Virginia starter Andrew Dobies (6-1) pitched well, but wound up with the loss after allowing seven runs on nine hits in 7-2/3 innings. He allowed just two runs on six hits through the first seven innings, however.
The first time through the lineup proved fruitless for both teams as Rogers and Dobies were superb, but Gaetti led off the top of the fourth with his 13th home run of the season to give the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead. The inning could have been much bigger for the Pack. Justin Riley singled and Colt Morton doubled to put runners on second and third with none out, but Morton broke for third while Riley held the base on David Hicks's chopper to the mound. Hicks was out at first, Morton was easily doubled off second, and Kyle Werman's relay to the plate easily was in time to retire Riley when he broke for the plate, completing the triple play.
The Pack added another run in the fifth on a single by Maynor and walks to Camp, Hargrave and Gaetti.
The 2-0 lead was plenty for Rogers, who retired 16 of 20 batters from the second through the seventh innings. He allowed back-to-back singles leading off the bottom of the second, but got a pair of strikeouts to work out of trouble. He had runners reach on an error and a single in the bottom of the fifth, and got out of that with a caught-stealing and a double-play grounder. Virginia mounted its most serious threat in the eighth, putting runners on first and second with none out and loading the bases with two down, but Rogers got out of that jam on two grounders and a fly ball.
NC State finally broke the game open in the top of the eighth. With one away, Riley singled to left, took second on a wild pitch and third on a balk. Colt Morton was walked intentionally, and with two down Chad Orvella singled to right to drive in Riley with the Pack's third run, leaving runners at first and second. Maynor singled to center to drive in Morton and make it 4-0. Orvella went to third on the play and Maynor took second on the throw to third, which went into the dugout and allowed Orvella to score and Maynor to go to third. Matt Camp walked, and relief pitcher Adam Laird's pickoff attempt was wide of first for an error that scored Maynor to make it 6-0. Camp wound up on second on the play. Adam Hargrave's single to right-center drove in Camp to give the Wolfpack an 8-0 lead.
The Cavaliers finally scored a run in the bottom of the ninth off of reliever Brandon Shipwash. Joe Koshansky led off and walked, took second on a passed ball, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Chris Sweet's single to right.
