WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jeremy Dutton had three extra-base hits and four RBIs, and Joe Gaetti homered twice and drove in four runs Saturday afternoon to lead NC State past Wake Forest 11-2 in the second game of the doubleheader at Gene Hooks Stadium. With the win, the ninth-ranked Wolfpack salvaged a split of the doubleheader and improved to 29-8 on the season, 8-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Wake Forest, ranked No. 20, fell to 21-11 overall and 7-6 in the conference.
Redshirt-freshman righthander Michael Rogers (8-1) got the win with his second complete game of the season. He allowed two runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out eight. Both runs came on solo home runs by Jamie D'Antona. Wake Forest lefthander Tim Morley (2-3) got the loss after allowing nine runs, six of them earned, on seven hits in 3-1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out one.
The Wolfpack got to Morley for seven runs in the top of the second inning. Chad Orvella and Marc Maynor walked with one away, and Adam Hargrave reached on an error by D'Antona to load the bases. Matt Camp squeezed home a run with a bunt single, and Dutton cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right-center, making it 4-0. Gaetti singled to drive in Dutton with the fifth run of the inning, and Colt Morton belted a two-run homer to dead center field, his 13th of the season, to make it 7-0, Wolfpack.
Wake Forest got a run back in the bottom of the second on D'Antona's opposite-field leadoff homer to right, but the Wolfpack answered that with back-to-back one-out bombs from Dutton and Gaetti in the top of the fourth, increasing the lead to 9-1 and knocking Morley out of the game.
D'Antona hit his second homer of the game and 13th of the season with one out in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 9-2.
NC State added the finishing touches to the rout on a one-out double by Dutton and a two-run homer to center field by Gaetti, his second of the game and 12th of the season.
NC State and Wake Forest will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at Gene Hooks Stadium on the Wake Forest campus. Game time will be 1:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WKNC, which is 88.1 on the FM dial, and the broadcast will be carried on the world-wide web at gopack.com.
