ZEBULON, N.C. - Phillip Davidson hurled a complete-game four-hitter, and NC State broke open a tight pitchers duel with a seven-run seventh inning Saturday night to defeat UNC Wilmington 6-2 in college baseball action at Five County Stadium. The Wolfpack, which defeated Old Dominion earlier in the day, extended its winning streak to 12 games, the longest since a 14-game streak in 1999, and improved to 16-4. UNCW dropped to 17-8 with the loss.
Davidson (2-1) went the distance, allowing just the two runs on four hits. He walked one and struck out six. Seahawks starter Jake Mullis (3-2) went 6-2/3 innings and left with the game tied at 2-2. He got the loss after allowing four runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out eight.
The Seahawks dinged Davidson for a run in the top of the second. Matt Wright walked with one out, stole second and went to third when Morton's throw bounced away from Adam Hargrave at second. Brad Denson's two-out single to center drove in Wright to make it 1-0, UNCW.
Marc Maynor reached on a one-out single to center field in the bottom of the fifth, stole second base, and scored the tying run on Hargrave's single to left. The Seahawks untied it in the top of the seventh. Matt Sutton reached on an error, and Matt Wright forced Sutton at second on a botched sacrifice attempt. Russ Simmerman then lined an opposite-field double down the line in left to drive in Wright with the unearned run and give UNCW a 2-1 lead.
The big inning for the Wolfpack began innocently enough, with Justin Riley reaching on an infield single. Lee Mezistrano pinch-hit for David Hicks and hit an opposite-field double into the left-field corner, with Riley holding at third on the play. Mullis nearly got out of the inning, striking out Maynor and Chad Orvella looking, but a wild pitch allowed Riley to score the tying run and sent Mezistrano to third. Hargrave walked to put runners on the corners, and a passed ball scored Mezistrano and sent Hargrave to second, giving the Wolfpack a 3-2 lead. Hargrave stole third, and Matt Camp greeted reliever Matt Sutton with an RBI triple to left, giving the Pack a 4-2 lead. Jeremy Dutton singled to drive in Camp, and Joe Gaetti welcomed reliever Blake Cross to the game with an RBI double off the wall in right field, making it 6-2.
NC State will play again on Sunday against Princeton. Game time is set for 4:30 at Five County Stadium, but inclement weather could force changes in the schedule. Fans are encouraged to check gopack.com frequently for possible schedule changes.
